Lolita Revisited

Humbert Humbert was a masochist.
The unrequited is a catalyst
for some, they might be driving coast to coast
and getting nowhere, not exactly cost
effective. Are they really that selective
though in choosing a relationship
especially if there's a private detective
on your tail. A girl who gives him lip,
for that he's giving up his life. A boring
person and he's looking for a cheerleader
who would cheer him up, and he could lead her
to maturity, with that imploring
look of hers. A kitten in expensive
furs if he could afford it, looking pensive
when she's bored.
There is some poetic
justice here, instead of the kinetic,
she is boring too, as much as him
and barely conscious of his own destruction.
For him it was a marginal seduction
and true love, for her a little mistake
like when you order a vanilla milkshake
and you get another, but you drink it
anyway. It doesn't pay to think,
look what it did for him
when the shallows
beckon and he sails onto the rocks
in order to get close to her, who swallows
and forgets, and he absorbs the shock.
